History of the BCSSTTC

The first BC Secondary Schools Table Tennis Championships tournament was held in 1973.

The event was the brain-child of Dr. Chandra Madhosingh, a popular science teacher at Britannia Secondary who moonlighted as a NASA moon rock specialist in his spare time. A table tennis player from his teens, Chandra migrated to BC at 19 from Trinidad and Tobago to further his academic studies, and he obtained a bachelor’s in science with concentrations in chemistry, physics and zoology at UBC. While studying at UBC he became the campus’s singles and doubles champion.

While completing his master’s, he took a job as a high school teacher in Vancouver and began working to promote table tennis. He volunteered his time to conduct coaching clinics and courses which were certified by the CTTA. Secondary and elementary schools became involved so he then formed the British Columbia School System Table Tennis Championship and became the sport commissioner. The annual BC Secondary Schools Table Tennis Championships, as it is known these days, is still going strong after 51 years.

Sadly for the myriad of students, teachers and general TT fans affected by his largesse, Dr. Madhosingh passed away in December of 2022 after a short illness. Despite his death, Chandra’s tournament lives on through the efforts of the BCSSTTC organizing committee members Frank Liao and Anson Lam along with a legion of hard-working volunteers who make the tournament a really exciting and inspiring spring event each year.

"Motivation is strong when the pay-off potential is large"
"Entropy can increase if it is given room to increase"

Results from BCSSTTC Tournaments

The results of table tennis competitions were extremely important to Chandra, and either handwritten or entered into a database, detailed results were tabulated for every tournament he organized. The BCSSTTC tournament was the annual event closest to his heart.

While the earliest results from the first decades of BCSSTTC tournament are lost to time, results from 2005-2009 and from 2012 remain. Click on any of the accordion tabs below to view results from 2024, 2023, 2022 and earlier.
